TJ Salway (he/him), Director

TJ Salway, Associate Professor of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, is a social epidemiologist who works to understand and improve the health of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (2S/LGBTQ) populations. In 2019-2020, he testified for two standing committees of the Canadian House of Commons, to inform federal policy to promote 2S/LGBTQ health equity. This resulted in the passage of Bill C-4, making it a crime to perpetrate anti-2S/LGBTQ practices, otherwise known as “conversion therapy.” TJ directs the REAFFIRM Collaborative, an interdisciplinary team studying effects of 2S/LGBTQ identity (in)validation. He founded MindMapBC, a 2S/LGBTQ-affirming mental health service finder.

At the Health Initiative for Men, he supports research efforts through contributions to the Our Bodies, Our Health national survey in coordination with the CBRC, with a focus on improving queer health in British Columbia. He also assists in delivering frontline services through the Health Initiative for Men, including harm reduction supplies, testing, vaccinations, and health education for GBQ men across the Lower Mainland. In his spare time, he enjoys trying new food spots across the Lower Mainland, taking scenic walks along the Shoreline Trail in Port Moody or through the forests of Belcarra, and catching sunsets at Jericho or Kitsilano Beach. He’s also an avid indoor plant enthusiast; his collection has grown large enough that he suspects they’re quietly staging a takeover. When he’s not tending to the greenery, he enjoys playing guitar, listening to folk music, and the occasional Netflix binge.

Broadly Kriti is interested in exploring the role of power in policy spaces and how they influence health outcomes. Kriti is a bharatanatyam and kathak dancer (two very different forms of Indian classical dance). You can also find Kriti at libraries working on some poetry projects, or browsing vintage shops.
